Drainage

Westwego has made many improvements in its drainage system over the past years and has recently contracted with Meyer Engineers to study 2 drainage issues in each district. As these needs are identified, the city is searching for funds to improve these situations. Shown at the left is a concrete lined canal that will increase drainage water detention and help speed water flow to the pumping station.

Wastewater Plant

The City of Westwego's Wastewater Plant fully treats and cleanses all wastewater before it is discharged back into the wetlands. We are the last community currently discharging into the wetlands and in January 2008 began the Sewer Force Main Project which will force the wastewater to the river after it is treated. This project, which has been funded mostly by state funds, should greatly improve our quality of life.

All of the sanitary wastewater produced by residents and business in the City of Westwego is properly treated and disinfected in accordance with all requirements of a wastewater discharge permit issued to the City by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ). One requirement of the City's wastewater discharge permit involves a mercury minimization program for wastewater discharges.

For information on how citizens of Westwego can help prevent mercury contamination of the City's wastewater please visit the links below:

It should also be noted that treated wastewater is no longer discharged into the wetlands south of the City. The City's new wastewater forcemain now is discharging the treated wastewater directly into the Mississippi River.

Streets

The City of Westwego's Street Department provides continual maintenance and upgrading of the city's streets. Over the past 10 years, all asphalt city streets have been overlaid. Potholes are quickly identified and repaired, but if you should notice one, please contact City Hall at 504-341-3424, and report it.

Water Treatment

The Mississippi River provides Westwego's freshwater supply. Water is pumped from the river into the treatment plant where it goes through several stages of treatment and filtration before being stored in one of the city's water tanks or towers for distribution to citizens. The "Muddy Mississippi" gets its name from the large quantity of silt this is moved by its currents. Seen in this picture is the first stage of processing where the muddy brown water enters the plant, and the silt is separated in the first stage of treatment.

Our water plant was constructed in the earlier 1900s, and although some repairs have been made, it is now necessary for a major overhaul to the plant. To accommodate the growing population in Westwego, a new clarifier is needed to enable the city to make sufficient quantities of water. The city plans to embark on the refurbishing of the water plant giving it a totally new facelift.
